What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

An artist's work comes from his inner well, from depths only he can reach. I have always made art by tapping that primal resource; it has brought me to broader strokes and greater schemes.

I read somewhere that the language of art is image. In order to speak this language, we must learn to live with it comfortably, knowing that it is inevitably influenced by emotions. So an artist's language is sometimes sensual, sometimes bold, sometimes spiritual, always the result of felt experiences.

I like to make it all happen. The work you see on these pages comes from many directions. Sometimes I wondered where I was headed and whether new directions were worthwhile. I no longer wonder, because I've learned to love the mystery.

Welcome to my gallery. If you have comments about the work or questions about commissions, I would love to hear from you.

Enjoy!

Biography
Patrick Parise was born in Brooklyn, New York, on Saint Patrick's Day, 1952. He is an identical twin, and has two other brothers and a sister. After his father passed away when Patrick was a young boy, the family moved to Middletown, New Jersey, where he lived until graduating from high school in 1970. Patrick's mother, from a family of opera singers and fashion designers, was a talented painter in her own right. But meeting the needs of her five children kept her from pursuing a career as an artist. Patrick watched his mother painting and was so impressed by the images she created that he decided to become an artist himself.

After dabbling with art during high school, Patrick chose to attend Bethany College, a school of fine arts in Kansas, where he studied painting under Ray Kaymeyer. When family financial problems made Bethany impractical, Patrick joined his older brother at the University of South Carolina, where he apprenticed with the distinguished printmaker and painter, Boyd Saunders. Falling in love with printmaking under Professor Saunders' guidance, Patrick opened his own printing studio, where he still turns out etchings on a Charles Brandt press.

Through etching, Patrick furthered his sense of fine line detail, meticulously drawing on copper and zinc plates. As he matured, Patrick carried his eye for detail into other media. In recent years Patrick has revived his first love, painting, bringing his artistic commitments full circle.

Patrick plans to continue printmaking while developing new styles of painting on varied surfaces, honing his sense of color, line, shape, and composition, and challenging himself to produce work that appeals to his own desire to seek the beautiful.

Patrick's award-winning work has achieved regional, national and international recognition, and many pieces now reside in museum, corporate and private collections. His projects include the design of custom floors, inlaid with wood, granite and marble, seven-foot-high candle holders in a local church, and many private commissions.

Patrick lives in Columbia, South Carolina, with Sandi, his wife of nearly thirty years, and their daughter, Kristy. For more information contact Patrick Parise at (803)790-2136 or at pat@patrickparise.com
